Herbs for Prostate Pain

Herbal treatments may be helpful for prostate pain. According to the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases, prostatitis is an often painful condition that manifests mostly in young and middle-aged men. Common signs and symptoms associated with prostatitis include painful or burning urination and the sensation of incomplete bladder emptying. Before taking herbs to help treat prostate pain, talk with your doctor about possible side effects, proper dosage and potential drug interactions.

Pau d'arco

Pau d'arco is an herb that may be helpful for prostate pain. According to the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, pau d'arco, also known as Tabebuia impetiginosa, is a tree native to South America that has been used to treat numerous health problems. Pau d'arco has been used to treat bacterial, fungal and viral infections, inflammation of the prostate gland or prostatitis, boils, ulcers and certain types of cancer. The bark of the plant is used medicinally. Dr. Sharol Tilgner, a naturopathic physician and author of the book "Herbal Medicine From the Heart of the Earth," states that pau d'arco is an anti-fungal, antibacterial, antiviral, anti-parasitic and anti-inflammatory. Pau d'arco is also an immune system modulator and may help reduce prostate-related pain.

Saw Palmetto

Saw palmetto, also known as Serenoa repens, is an herb that may be beneficial for prostate pain. The National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine states that saw palmetto is a small palm tree native to the eastern United States. The fruit of the tree has been used medicinally for centuries by the Seminole tribe of Florida. Saw palmetto has a sweet, soapy taste. According to Ed Smith, an herbalist and author of the book "Therapeutic Herb Manual," saw palmetto relaxes and soothes the urinary tract, improves urinary outflow and has an anti-androgenic effect on the prostate gland. Tilgner notes that saw palmetto is an anti-inflammatory, antispasmodic, alterative, diuretic and male reproductive tract tonic and supports tissue nutrition of the urinary tract.

Pygeum

Pygeum is an herb that may be effective for prostate pain. Pygeum is a tree native to Africa that can grow to a height of 150 feet. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, several studies suggest that pygeum, also known as Prunus africana, may help decrease symptoms of benign prostatic hypertrophy, or BPH, and both bacterial and nonbacterial prostatitis in men with mild-to-moderate urinary symptoms. The bark of the tree is used medicinally. Dr. William A. Mitchell Jr., a naturopathic physician and author of the book "Plant Medicine in Practice," states that pygeum is useful for treating benign prostatitis.
