Protein helps your body repair tissues, heal wounds and fight off infections. According to Diet.com, when your kidneys and liver are impaired, protein and waste products can build up in your bloodstream and cause a loss of appetite, nausea, headaches, a bad taste, fatigue and further damage to your liver and kidneys, if you already have liver problems or kidney disease. If you have high protein levels, your doctor may prescribe a low-protein diet in an effort to decrease the amount of protein and waste in your blood and reduce pressure on your kidneys and liver.

Fruits

Many fruits are low in protein and high in vitamins, minerals and fiber. One medium apple, 1 medium apricot, 1 medium banana, 1 cup of blackberries, 1 cup of blueberries, 10 raw cherries and ½ cup of pink and white grapefruits contain between .26 g and 1.22 g of protein per serving.

Vegetables

Many vegetables contain low levels of protein and high levels of fiber and vitamins. A half a cup of cooked kale without salt, 1 cup of collard greens, ½ cup of cooked cabbage without salt, 1 cup of raw spinach, ½ cup of raw arugula, 1 cup of raw sliced cucumbers, two stalks of celery and ½ cup of cooked mustard greens contain between .26 g to 4.01 g of protein per serving.

Nuts

If you want a low-protein snack try snacking on 20 to 24 unroasted hazelnuts, six to eight unroasted Brazil nuts, 14 unroasted walnut halves, 10 to 12 dry roasted macadamia nuts, 18 to 20 pecan halves and 16 to 18 dry roasted cashews, containing 2 g to 4 g of protein per serving.

Healthy Oils

Healthy unsaturated oils such as olive oil, canola oil, flaxseed oil and safflower oil are rich in omega-3 fatty acids and protein-free.

Breads and Starches

Some starches and breads contain low levels of protein. Breads and starches such as ½ cup of cooked pasta, ½ cup of macaroni, ½ cup of hot cereal, ½ cup of corn, one slice of bread, one small or medium dinner rolls, 1/3 cup of cooked rice, ½ cup of mashed or a 3-inch baked potato, six saltine crackers, three squares of graham crackers, ½ a hamburger bun, ½ a hot dog bun, ½ of 2 oz. of a bagel, ½ of an English muffins and two rice cakes contain approximately 3 g of protein per serving.

Dairy Products

Some dairy foods are low in protein. Dairy foods like ½ cup of custard, ½ cup of pudding and ½ cup of frozen yogurt contain between 3 g and 4 g of protein per serving, while 1 cup of milk contains 8 g of protein per serving.
