The prostate is a gland in males that produces fluid to mix with sperm and create semen. The gland is the size of a walnut and surrounds the urethra, inside the male body below the bladder. Prostatitis is an infection of the prostate gland. Bacteria typically cause the infection. As males age, the prostate gland grows; problems with the prostate become more common in males over the age of 50 because of the size of the gland, according to Medline Plus.
Fever
An acute infection of the prostate begins quickly. A high fever accompanied with chills is common. The high fever begins quickly. Chronic prostatitis does not usually cause a fever in the affected man.
Urination Difficulties
Urinating becomes difficult with prostatitis. Much of these difficulties occur because of muscle spasms in the perineum or the bladder, according to the Merck Manual of Health Information. The perineum is the area of the male body between the anus and the scrotum. The flow of urine may hesitate or take a long time to begin when attempting to urinate. Dribbling small amounts of urine at a time may occur. The male may experience pain or a burning sensation while urinating when the prostate is infected. Frequent urges to urinate may also occur. Males may have to wake up frequently at night to urinate, also referred to as nocturia, according to the Mayo Clinic. Nocturia is most common with chronic bacterial prostatitis, not acute infections. Some men may experience blood in the urine.
Gastrointestinal Discomfort
Males with an acute case of prostatitis may experience general feelings of discomfort. In addition to the unwell feelings, he may experience gastrointestinal distress such as nausea and vomiting. These symptoms decrease once antibiotic treatment starts.
Pain
Males experience pain with prostatitis. The pain may occur in several different locations, in addition to painful urination. Pain is common in the penis, the perineum and the scrotum. Some males may also feel pain in the lower back, abdomen and in the pelvis. Erections of the penis and ejaculating can also be difficult to sustain and may be painful. For men with chronic prostatitis, the pain becomes chronic and can come and go in cycles.
