Prostatitis is an inflammation of the prostate gland. There are several types, including acute bacterial, chronic bacterial and nonbacterial. Pain and difficulty urinating are the most frequent symptoms. It is important to get prostatitis diagnosed and treated. Conventional treatments include medications such as antibiotics, pain medication, alpha blockers and muscle relaxers and, rarely, surgery. Your physician may also recommend one or more home remedies to alleviate the symptoms; the appropriate home remedy is dependent on the type of prostatitis you have.
Warm Baths
Spending time in a warm bath or a sitz bath may ease the pain of prostatitis. A sitz bath is generally a small tub that you place over your toilet after filling it with water at the recommended temperature. You should stay in the tub or sitz bath for 15 to 20 minutes. If you have heart problems, only do this with your heart doctor's permission.
Frequent Ejaculation
Frequent ejaculation, through intercourse or masturbation, can lessen the symptoms of prostatitis and help prevent its recurrence. Your physician may recommend this weekly or more often.
Dietary Modifications
You may be instructed to avoid caffeine, alcohol and spicy foods. You may need to avoid citrus foods such as oranges, lemons and grapefruit and other acidic foods. You may be encouraged to increase your beverage intake. Water is the healthiest beverage choice.
Comfortable Seats
It may help to sit on a cushion or a bed pillow. This helps ease the pain of a swollen prostate gland. Avoid hard surfaces and awkward seats which place pressure on the swollen gland.
Stool Softener
The Prostatitis Foundation explains that prostatitis symptoms are sometimes treated with a stool softener. These are often available over-the-counter. Allow yourself to have a bowel movement as soon as possible after the urge strikes.
Proper Urination
The U.S. National Library of Medicine recommends you urinate frequently and be sure to empty your bladder completely. It is helpful to consciously relax while voiding, while avoiding distractions or feeling rushed.
Good Hygiene
Some cases of prostatitis occur due to a lapse in good hygiene. Keep the penis clean and use a latex condom when having sexual intercourse, especially anal intercourse. This can prevent a worsening of symptoms or a recurrence of infection.
Bedrest
Some cases of prostatitis require bed rest. You may be allowed out of bed only to use the bathroom. This usually lasts for no more than a week.
