What Foods Are Good for Skin Elasticity?

The skin is the human body's largest organ. It is responsible for protecting our organs from the environment, for regulating body temperature, and is the outer layer we show to the rest of the world. Not only does the skin reflect our inner health, but it also can tell our age. To keep the skin at its healthiest, avoid smoking, caffeine and sugary drinks. Water is always the best tool for hydrating the body from the inside out. In order to keep the skin in its best condition, eat foods that help protect against skin cancer, especially those rich in antioxidants and vitamins.

Proteins

Proteins in the diet exist as a building block for the body's cells. When the proteins are digested, they break down into amino acids that support skin cells, growth and regeneration. Vitamins that are not fat soluble need amino acids to be able to enter and be utilized by the cells. Complete proteins can be obtained easily through the diet by consuming meat, eggs and dairy products. For vegetarians, it may be slightly trickier to get a complete protein source, but in general, combining a grain with a nut or legume will do the job.

Omega 3 & 6 Fatty Acids

Omega 3 and 6 are essential fatty acids. These fats are healthy and cannot be made within the body, so they must be obtained through the diet. These fats are good for skin elasticity because they help to prevent surface damage from the sun, they protect from internal damage as they form a thin protective layer around each cell, and they even help by reducing inflammation within the body, showing up as swelling or redness on the skin. Foods with these healthy omega fats include fish, flaxseeds and walnuts. Omega 3 and 6 can be found in some cooking oils, but the polyunsaturated fat molecules are fragile and will be damaged if this oil is heated to high temperatures. This oil is best used at low temperature cooking, or poured onto the food after it has been cooked.

Vitamin E

Vitamin E is a valuable and popular vitamin for protecting skin elasticity. Vitamin E is often applied in a cream or oil topically, which has been seen to be just as effective as obtaining the vitamin orally through supplements or food. Vitamin E, much like healthy polyunsaturated fats, help to protect skin cells and strengthens them from damage. Vitamin E can be obtained in the diet by eating foods such as vegetable oil, nuts, seeds, olives, spinach and asparagus.

Water

Water is the single most important substance for hydrating and protecting the health of the skin. Beyond this, water is also a useful tool for helping to remove toxins from the body that may dull the appearance and elasticity of skin if left to build up. Water essential to move minerals and vitamins around the body, granting the cells access to them. Dehydrated skin is dry and may crack, while well-hydrated skin will appear moisturized and have good elasticity. Tap water may not be the best source, though, as it may contain unnecessary minerals that the body will then need to flush out later. Drinking bottled or filtered water will ensure the best source of inner hydration for the skin.

Fiber

Fiber is widely recognized as a carbohydrate that helps to regulate the bowels. Toxins that build up in a stagnant digestive system will also toxify the body. When the body is in a very toxic state, depletion of vitamins may occur, in addition to some excess minerals. Many inner health conditions show up on the skin in forms of dry patches, acne, spotting and wrinkles. Consuming a diet rich in fiber will help to keep bowel movements regular and toxicity levels in the body low, so that the body and skin conditions may flourish.
